Brainstorming

Brainstorming

For today I’ve chosen to highlight the most interesting things about Brainstorming and present you with an insight that can help you no matter what role you currently have in your company. The clearest definition that sums up what Brainstorming actually is comes from the term brainstorm, which translated, refers to a „brilliant idea”, something that can solve a problem.

The times our current generation is going through are fragile. As we learned in Pandemic, ‘normal’ can change at any time. But whatever the context, people have the ability to adapt, to find alternatives, and can always discover something new.

This „something” is actually a creative concept that changes with every stage we go through. This thought brings to mind exactly the process a cocoon goes through until it becomes a butterfly. Just as it goes through a journey from egg, larva (caterpillar), chrysalis and butterfly, we also go through periods throughout our lives that make us grow, develop new plans and ideas.

Depending on the context, this concept can be an idea, a product, a scenario, a package, a solution or something else.

In essence, brainstorming is a technique that generates ideas. In a technical sense, it is explained as follows: in a session, the moderator or team-leader presents a problem to the meeting participants and they have to participate by contributing ideas to solve the problem. The purpose of this technique is firstly to take us out of the conform zone and position us in a zone that takes us out of the sphere of stereotypical thinking we have, to be able to go beyond our own horizon of familiar data and secondly to generate a new set of ideas from which we can later choose.

According to current studies, if this technique is associated with a specific problem, it is more successful than if it is approached as a general concept.

A very interesting thing about brainstorming is that it can be used both individually and in a group, even though initially in the development and elaboration of this Osborn theory, a group of 12 people was considered ideal.

As in any great thing, there are rules, and below I will mention the most important things that once ingrained in the mind, can simplify our work.

First of all, we must detach ourselves from prejudices and think freely, have the courage to express our opinion, and be able to say things we find impossible, inappropriate or funny. Bold ideas help to grind out final decisions.Time allocated to a Debate is very important, by exposing the pros and cons, the chances of a wise decision are increased.

Secondly, we need to think of ideas as building a house, once we have established what the foundation and starting point is, the aim is to continue building on top of the foundation, i.e. on top of what we already have, so we build on the ideas we have established previously.

And lastly the number of ideas generated should be large, as it gives the possibility to combine ideas and the opportunity to have a choice.

I wish you have the courage to take the initiative in your Company and propose a meeting where you implement this technique, you’ll thank me later!
